Santa Barbara Earthquake of June 29, 1925
This booklet was published by Pastor Charles Wesley Burns of the First Methodist Church. It helped raise funds for the reconstruction of the church, which was totally destroyed. The paragraph below and the captions to the photographs are those of the booklet's author. For the first time in 113 years Santa Barbara was shaken by a destructive earthquake on Monday, June 29, 1925, at 6:45 A.M. The tremor lasted 19 seconds. Eleven persons died at once, and two succumbed later. Sixty-five were injured. Property loss involved principally Estado (State Street) properties, churches, schools, and the dwellings of the poor, especially old adobes. Damage on Estado Street, $8,000,000; in the entire business district, $10,000,000; in residential neighborhoods, including churches, schools, hospitals, and city and county buildings $5,000,000. Total $15,000,000, including $300,000 loss in chimneys alone. (Statistics by Chamber of Commerce.) |
