The New City Hall

The old City Hall was destroyed, but not rebuilt on the old site. Instead it was used to build San Francisco's new public library opened in 1916.
For a new City Hall and Civic Center, San Franciscans voted a bond issue, insuring that the piece meal construction used to build the old city hall would never be used again. The City Hall was built a block away.

Mayor Rolph had hoped it would be ready for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, but it was not dedicated until December 28, 1915, twenty-four days after the Exposition closed.
