GROWING UP IN SAN FRANCISCO Neptune Beach
by Bill Roddy
I went their many times as a child, as young as 3 years old in 1925. We took the ferry to Alameda and a Red Car to the Beach. I think it was a Red SP car or it could be yellow, Key System. This was the only San Francisco Bay water that was warm enough to swim in, but you had to wade pretty far out to do so. My mother and I knew some wonderful people who had a house on the water near Neptune Beach. You could sit on the back porch and see the water lapping at the shoreline below.
Then they filled in the bay to build more houses and my friends' house suddenly was inland with only a view across the street.
