San Francisco Stereo Photographs, circa 1875. 4. NEW MONTGOMERY AND MARKETThis photograph was taken from the bridge that linked the Grand Hotel
on the right with the Palace Hotel. Senator Sharon's mistress, Sarah
Hill, stayed at the Grand because he was afraid she would be seen at the
Palace. She would cross the bridge in the dead of night to stay with him
at the Palace. Her life was tragic. Read more about her and her husband,
David S. Terry, in the epilogue of the
Sanchez File.
The domed building above the Market Street horse car is the Masonic
Temple.
Notice the light colored crosswalks. They were made of smooth cut
stone so ladies wouldn't trip on the cobblestones used on streets.
