GOLD RUSH DAYS, 1851
By late 1848 hundreds of ships had been abandoned along the
waterfront as gold crazed seaman headed for the Sierra Nevada.
As the bay was filled in these hulks became saloons, stores and
hotels as far inland as Montgomery Street. The city bought one as a jail.
