The Larkin Papers: Ten volumes

Introduction

Thomas Oliver Larkin
From the Annals of San Francisco

Larkin was the only American consul of the United States in the Mexican province of California. His post was Monterey. The ten volumes published by the University of California beginning in 1951 contain his correspondence concerning business, politics, consular affairs, and issues relating to the U.S. conquest of California. His papers were acquired by the university from Hubert Howe Bancroft in 1905.
Some of his well known correspondents were Juan Bautista Alvarado, Faxon Dean Atherton, Juan Bandini, James Buchanan, John C. Calhoun, Jose Castro, other members of the Castro family, Henry Clay, William Hartnell, Jacob Primer Leese, William Alexander Leidesdorff, Pio Pico, John Drake Sloat,  John Augustus Sutter, and Mariano Gualdalupe Vallejo.

I appreciate the courtesy of the Bancroft Library in granting permission to publish excerpts from the Larkin Papers.
