*NOTE
The flat boat may be the ferry
that figured in Sánchez's death. During the storm of 1852 the Pájaro
River ran deep. After the boat sunk it remained hidden until the dry summer
when the river lowered and the boat was exposed, dragged up on the bank
and found damaged, probably from being rammed by the tree trunk.
The Pájaro River, usually placid, can still
cause serious flooding. During the storms of early 1995 there was heavy
flooding in Castroville and adjacent farmlands, and to the river's
namesake, the community of Pajaro, adjacent to Watsonville.
